![]() The wildlife: You can expect serendipitous sightings of countless species of animals, ranging from black bears and white-tailed deer, to coyotes, raccoons, skunks, otters, foxes, deer, and occasional moose. Head here for a combo of towering forests, wildflower-carpeted meadows and marshes, rugged shores, sheltered coves, 125 miles of hiking trails, and 45 miles of rustic carriage roads famously gifted by philanthropist John D. The setting: The roll call of wildlife is huge at this Maine-coast archipelago covering 47,000 of easily accessible land on Mount Desert Island, Isle au Haut, and the Schoodic Peninsula (it’s the only national park in all of New England). We’ve travelled coast to coast to stake out the nation’s best places for getting up-close with interesting beasts big and small (or at least marvelling at them from afar). The zoo is twice the price anyway, and you won't create the memories you will at a place such as this.Given its huge variety of landscapes, it comes as no surprise that America is home to an incredible richness of wildlife - most of which has found refuge in its protected national parks. We went to the San Antonio Zoo afterward, and although it was nice.was a disappointment after doing this activity! Here, you are right up close and personal with the animals and can really appreciate their beauty and unique-ness. Beware, the ostriches are VERY curious and they WILL stick their long necks into your vehicle if you make it convenient for them to do so. The animals literally come right up to the side of your car and are so gentle and friendly. You definitely have to purchase the food baggies or the animals will not approach you. This was BY FAR the best part of our trip, and there weren't many activities within a 60 mile radius that we didn't cover? In fact, we went back to do this excursion 2 days in a row! We purchased 2 bags of food each time, & drove our own rental vehicle throughout this massive and beautiful ranch. We rented a car and went on this safari, which is about 35 miles from downtown San Antonio. The Riverwalk was great, but you can only do so much of that before you need a change of scenery. My husband and I booked a VRBO in the King William District of San Antonio. Plus there is not so many animals that you would need a lot of food. The employees throw feed on the ground and every car is trying to feed the animals so the animals do not really care to come up for food. I recommend only buying 1 bag of food if any at all. ![]() It is a good experience if you have never done this kind of thing. There is also a place to go in (for extra money) where various birds fly all around you. At the end (or beginning) there is a small area to see birds, monkeys, and other animals along with a restaurant and gift shop. ![]() About half way through the park, there is a place to park and use the bathroom and walk up to the fenced in giraffes. We really only saw deer and a few other hooved animals. ![]() Sometimes cars parked in the middle of the road so other cars could not pass and would sit there for 20 minutes or more so it could be very frustrating. The giraffes can no longer come up to your car-they are in a fenced in area-which was a bummer as well. You can no longer feed the animals out of your hand so that was a HUGE bummer. We took our kids here for the 1st time and I have not been here for about 20 years. I used to go here as a kid and have very fond memories of this place.
